Finding your way back to yourself

1

First Things First. Drop Your Shoulders.

Before you can grow, heal, or figure out what comes next, you've got to find your feet. When life feels overwhelming, our nervous systems kick into protection mode, making it harder to think clearly, connect, or even recognize what we need. So before you try to fix everything, take a breath. Drop your shoulders. Find your way back to steady. Because regulation comes before everything else.

2

You Can't Change What You Don't Acknowledge.

We carry so much more than we let on. The exhaustion, the heartbreak, the expectations, and all the things we tell ourselves we should be able to handle. But growth doesn't begin by pretending we're fine. It begins when we get curious about what we're feeling, what we've been carrying, and what we might need. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to start by acknowledging what's there.

3

You Weren't Meant to Do This Alone.

Here's the thing about being human: we're wired for connection. We heal, grow, and find our way through the hard stuff in relationships with people who make us feel seen. Sometimes that means letting someone in. Sometimes it means repairing what's been hurt. And sometimes it means remembering that you deserve the same compassion you so freely give everyone else. Connection changes everything, including how we see ourselves.

FAQs about how to work with Dr. Jody

Where do I even start if I'm feeling overwhelmed or disconnected?

First of all, you're not alone. Being human is hard, and sometimes life feels like a whole lot more than we're equipped to carry. Whether you're exhausted, anxious, struggling in your relationships, or just feeling a little lost, you don't have to figure it all out at once. Start with one conversation, one resource, or one small step toward understanding what's happening inside you. And around here, we’ve created a few things that will help us (you and me) stay connected: subscribe to a monthly Journal where Jody will land in your inbox, listen to Unlonely (her podcast that’s in its fourth season), and follow along on any or all of our social channels.

Why do I feel so emotionally exhausted, even when nothing is technically wrong?

Sometimes we're not just tired. We're carrying the weight of expectations, responsibilities, relationships, and a world that rarely gives us a moment to catch our breath. Dr. Jody explores why our nervous systems get overwhelmed, how disconnection can contribute to exhaustion, and why the answer isn't always another bubble bath or a better morning routine. Sometimes what we need most is to feel seen.

Why do I react so strongly to things that shouldn't be a big deal?

Ever lose your cool over something small and then wonder what the hell just happened? Welcome to having a nervous system. Our reactions are often connected to stress, past experiences, and how safe or overwhelmed we feel in the moment. Understanding emotional regulation helps us recognize our triggers, respond with more intention, and repair when we don't get it right. Because none of us gets it right all the time.

Why do I feel lonely even when I'm surrounded by people?

Here's the thing about loneliness: you can be surrounded by people and still feel completely alone. Connection isn't just about having people around. It's about feeling understood, acknowledged, and safe enough to show up as yourself. Dr. Jody explores the science of connection and why being truly seen matters so much to our emotional well-being.

How do I set boundaries without feeling guilty or hurting my relationships?

Sometimes saying no isn't the hardest part. It's everything that comes afterward. The guilt, the overthinking, the wondering if someone's upset with you. Healthy boundaries aren't about shutting people out. They're about learning how to honour your own needs while staying connected to the people who matter. And yes, you can be kind and still have boundaries.

What does it actually mean to feel seen, and why does it matter so much?

We all have a fundamental need to feel seen. Not fixed. Not judged. Not told to calm down or look on the bright side. Just acknowledged. When someone takes the time to understand our experience, it can change how we feel about ourselves and our relationships. Dr. Jody's work explores why acknowledgment is such a powerful part of human connection and how we can offer more of it to ourselves and each other.
